Milling & Grinding
In cases where the surface layer of the asphalt is badly deteriorated but the base is structurally sound, milling is performed prior to resurfacing. This requires a milling machine to be mobilized to the location. Depending on the severity of the situation, milling or grinding can be performed from a depth of 1/2 inch up to 10 - 12 inches. The old materials are trucked away to an approved asphalt recycling location, usually an asphalt plant.
Milling and grinding is also used around curbs, drains, aprons and sidewalks to maintain curb reveals and to ensure smooth transitions to other surfaces. After grinding, any excess material left on the pavement is swept up before the tack coat or resurfacing layer is installed
